Big Sirs of Swing with Arroyo Grande High School as opening band. The concert goes from 12:30 pm to 4:00 on Sunday the 23rd at the Pismo Beach Veteran’s Building, 390 Bello Street in Pismo Beach. We will have a jam session starting at 11:00 a.m. Admission is now $10 members, $15 Non-members. Buy memberships at the event! Food and drinks and a BIG WOODEN DANCE FLOOR are available. Our February 23rd Feature Band will be the Big Sirs of Swing! “The Big Sirs of Swing” is a Gypsy Jazz Quartet based on the Central Coast of California. The Gypsy Jazz Genre consists of “Acoustic” Jazz and Swing and was conceived in France in the 1930s by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli.
The Big Sirs play and sing original Django tunes, classic Jazz and Swing standards, as well as original music of their own, all in the exciting and toe tapping flavor of Gypsy Jazz. The band consists of: Daniel Cimo on Violin and Vocals, Forrest Williams on Lead Guitar, Ron Mileur on Rhythm Guitar, and Alex Morrison on Stand up Bass.
These guys are a great example of how talented individuals can come together to form a terrific band sound that is cohesive and exciting!
The opening band will be the Arroyo Grande High School Eagle’s Jazz Band. This ensemble is made up of students who are in the Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, and/or Percussion Ensemble. The goal of this class is for students to develop skills in playing various jazz styles. Students will learn how to play music in the following styles: Swing, Latin, Funk, Samba, Rock, and many others. Students will also learn about the history of the previous styles of music.
Brass and woodwind musicians must also be a member of Concert Band or Wind Ensemble in order to participate in this class. This is because they focus on the fundamentals of playing in Concert Band and Wind Ensemble, so students are expected to apply in a more advanced manner in Jazz Band. Drummers, piano players, guitarists and bass guitarists are not required to be a part of Concert Band and Wind Ensemble in order to participate.
