Our Feature Band – Kathryn Loomis & Co.
Kathryn Loomis graduated from Cal Poly in 2021. Her band includes the current director of the Cal Poly Jazz Ensemble program, Dylan Johnson on bass, Daryl Voss, another Cal Poly alumni, on drums, Ron McCarley, Director of Jazz Studies at Cuesta College, on reeds, and well-known pianist Jim Barnett.
The music of Kathryn Loomis & Company adds a romantic and feel-good atmosphere to any event! Whether singing a pop favorite or vintage jazz standard, Kathryn’s musical approach makes her performances as timeless as the songs she sings. Loomis is also an accomplished singer-songwriter. She recently recorded and released her debut album of original songs titled “The Nicest Thing.” Born and raised in Arroyo Grande, Kathryn graduated with an Associate of Arts degree in Fine Art at Allan Hancock College, and a Bachelor of Music at Cal Poly.
Opening Act – The Cal Poly Jazz Combo and the Cal Poly SLO Swing Dance Club
The opening band will be a student led Cal Poly Jazz Combo, called Early Risers, under the direction of Dylan Johnson, and led by saxophonist Max Roberts. This band will provide music for the Cal Poly SLO Swing Dance Demonstration. Cal Poly Jazz Ensembles provide opportunities for students to learn the jazz language through performance of literature from the great bands of all eras, arranging and composition of new works, and improvisation based on the masters of the music. They participate in a varied and exciting schedule of events.
This event will include a Dance Demonstration by the Cal Poly SLO Swing Dance Club (CP Swing). CP Swing has been a warm and welcoming environment for years, and the officers of this club work to make sure it feels that way to everyone who stops by. CP Swing hosts free lessons every Sunday with bonus lessons on Wednesdays, teaching Lindy Hop, East Coast Swing, Charleston, Balboa, and Solo Jazz. This year, the club is bringing back the beloved San Luis Obispo Lindy Hop Exchange, SLOx, in May, for its 20th anniversary. The group of dancers pictured are all officers of the club or on the teaching committee, a group of people dedicated to providing a welcoming, fun environment to teach and learn various types of swing dance.
We will be passing the hat during this performance. All donations will be split between the jazz combo and the swing dance club. Please be generous that day!
